Geffen
Records was started in 1980 by record business entrepreneur David Geffen
(who’s first major dealings were to get Laura Nyro signed to Columbia Records
and start the Asylum Label in 1971). After getting fired as vice-president
of Warner Brothers Pictures (1975-78), he was given the option to start
a new label. Geffen signed three big names right out of the box, Donna
Summer, Elton John, and incredibly John & Yoko (after their 5 year
hiatus).
Geffen’s
artist roster was impressive with many established acts and newer finds:
Joni
Mitchell, Neil Young, Wang Chung, Madness, Asia , Peter Gabriel, Cher,
Whitesnake, Aerosmith, Guns and Roses.
The
label was distributed by Warner Brothers in the USA , (CBS in UK ), until
distribution was picked up by MCA/Universal in 1990, Geffen merged with
DGC/Interscope (another Geffen label) in 1997 and totally absorbed into
Interscope in 2007.
