Over
the years in the recording industry small independent labels do one of
three things:
1).
They blossom and bloom to become industry powerhouses (Capitol, Motown).
2).
They become sucessful or interesting enough for a larger company to incorporate
it into it's own larger system (where interest usually fades).
3).
It has it's own little niche but usually is unable to sustain itself and
quietly fades away.
GNP
(the Crescendo was added later) didn't do any of these things. It's still
alive after 56 years !
The
label was founded in 1954 by DJ and club owner (the Crescendo in Hollywood)
Gene Norman. It initially had built up a strong Jazz and MOR/Pop roster.
In 1963 Gene sold off his nightclub to focus solely on the recording industry.
At this point the Crescendo name was added. GNP Crescendo's artist roster
expanded to cover ALL types of music.
Over
the years the label had signed a diversely impressive group of artists,
Lionel Hampton, Stan Kenton, Art Tatum (Jazz), Dick Dale (surf), The Mom
and Dads (polka), Tito Puente (Latin), Billy Strange (guitar/rock), Limelighters
(folk) ,John Mayall, Savoy Brown (Heavy Brit-blues) and their only chartbuster
The Seeds (Garage-Psych).
Nowadays
the label is primarily focused on re-issues and Sci-Fi Soundtrack albums
and is co-owned by Gene's son Neil.
